Captures both the pain and the pity of a war that almost defies comprehension. THE GUARDIAN

An epic tale of love and war.

This critically acclaimed version of Sebastian Faulks's bestselling novel is a mesmerising story of love, courage and sacrifice.

In pre-war France, a young Englishman Stephen Wraysford embarks on a passionate and dangerous affair with the beautiful Isabelle that turns their world upside down.

As the war breaks out over the idyll of his former life, Stephen must lead his men through the carnage of the Battle Of The Somme. Faced with the unprecedented horror of the war, Stephen clings to the memory of Isabelle as his world explodes around him.

Recently aired over Christmas on BBC 1, this new version follows on from the hit West End production.

Curriculum information

Birdsong allows students to see their learning coming to life, whether  they are studying the text directly for AS/A-level or getting to grips with life in World War or notion of class, exploring the period or themes of loyalty and betrayal in drama, or seeking to understand that world in reference to History at KS3-5 or the “Clashes and Collision” or “Conflict” poetry anthology at GCSE or for creative discussion and relationships; this play is an excellent stimulus for your work in the classroom.

Birdsong offers a marvellous active resource and compliment to curriculum learning through workshops that support students in developing: cultural capital, an ability to respond critically and creatively and understand and to speak confidently about the emotional and historical life of the play, the novel and related texts.
