Located on the first floor of the theatre, The Marlowe Studio is our second auditorium, and plays host to a wide range of performances, gigs, workshops and other events.

A highly flexible and adaptable space, with a capacity of between 150 on a retractable seating bank, and 300 for a standing event, the studio can also be set out cabaret style, with round tables and chairs.

This flexibility is reflected in it's output - in an average season (in so far as there is such a thing!) the studio will host comedy, a variety of music gigs, innovative theatre, children's shows, and the very definitely not for children Laid Bare Cabaret.

One of the studio's major roles is to be our home for new writing, whether this is in the form of full performances, workshops, or rehearsed readings of works-in-progress. It's where our own home-grown productions, such as A Better Woman have taken shape and premiered.

It's also a place for some of the most unusual and adventurous theatre being produced in Britain today - shows like Pentabus & Paines Plough's Every Brilliant Thing, the work of full-mask company Vamos, or the Edinburgh Festival hit Ross & Rachel.

In addition, the studio is the venue for two popular comedy nights, The Marlowe Comedy Club and The Alternative Comedy Show, and is often used by big names like Ross Noble as a 'try-out' venue for new material.

As if all of that wasn't enough the studio is also building a growing reputation as a venue for intimate music gigs, featuring a wide variety of musical styles, from folk legends like Martin Carthy to rock groups like Nine Below Zero and local acts like Ben Russell And The Charmers.

If you're looking for something that will surprise you, you'll probably find it in The Marlowe Studio.
